Skilled Migration
The General Skilled Migration (GSM) program is designed to overcome skill shortages in Australia. To be eligible for skilled migration applicants must generally be qualified and have experience in a skilled occupation, which appears on the Skilled Occupations List.
Applicants must also be under the age of 45, have at least Vocational English* and have recent extensive work experience in a skilled occupation, which is on the government’s Skilled Occupation List.
In addition to satisfying the basic health and character requirements which apply to all Australian visas in order to obtain a skilled visa, applicants must meet the pass mark for the skilled visa points test. The criteria for skilled visas relate to the applicants age, English ability, occupation, work experience, education, spouse skills (if applicable) and sponsorship by a close relative.
Bonus points are awarded for Australian skilled work experience; or fluency in one of Australia's major community languages, other than English. If you can pass the points test, then provided you meet the requirements regarding character and health you will, on the face of it, obtain your skilled visa. The Skilled Independent (Migrant) visa (subclass 175) has a pass mark of 120.
Skilled migration is also available for overseas students who have completed tertiary qualifications in Australia. Overseas students need to have 2 years full time tertiary study in Australia in order to qualify.
Overseas students studying in Australia will need to meet requirements of having a skills assessment in a nominated occupation, at least Vocational English* language ability and must be under 45. Provided an overseas student lodges an application within 6 months of completing their course the usual work experience requirement will be waived.
The Skilled Independent (Residence) visa (subclass 885) currently has a pass mark of 120. The Skilled Sponsored (Residence) visa (subclass 886) has a pass mark of 100.
* From 1st January 2010 Competent English will be required for all skilled migration visas
