Parent Migration

Parents can migrate to Australia if they have a child in Australia who is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.

The Australian government limits the number of Parent visas available each year.

Therefore, parents who apply and meet the basic criteria for this visa are placed in a global queue. Whilst the Australian government recently added 4000 Parent places in the Family Migration stream, applicants are still experiencing substantial waits before being granted a visa, taking up to 19 years in some cases.

Parents may choose to apply for a Contributory Parent visa where the parents pay a larger application fee and an Assurance of Support (AoS) bond. The waiting period for the grant of a Contributory Parent visa is much shorter, between two and three years in some cases.

Parents must also pass the 'balance of family' test which specifies that at least half of their children must live permanently in Australia; or more children live permanently in Australia than any other single country.

Parents must be sponsored by their child who has been settled in Australia as a citizen or permanent resident normally for at least two years. The sponsor must provide a legal undertaking to support the parents during their first two years in Australia.

Parents must also satisfy health and character requirements for permanent entry to Australia.

If you plan to make a migration application, it is essential to know the Australian immigration legislation requirement.  Contact us for more details.
